Barnes Football Club, established in 1862, holds a significant place in football history as one of England’s oldest clubs and a key contributor to the sport’s early development.

Founding and Early Influence

Founded by Ebenezer Cobb Morley, a solicitor and avid sportsman, Barnes FC was instrumental in shaping modern football. Morley’s initiative led to the creation of the Football Association (FA) in 1863, where he served as the first secretary and later as president. He was pivotal in drafting the original Laws of the Game, laying the foundation for standardized football rules.

The club’s inaugural match occurred on 29th November 1862, securing a 2–0 victory against Richmond at Barn Elms Park. Barnes FC also participated in the first-ever match under FA rules on 19 December 1863, resulting in a goalless draw against Richmond.

Competitive Achievements

Barnes FC was among the 15 teams in the inaugural FA Cup in 1871–72, winning the tournament’s first match by defeating Civil Service 2–0. The club competed in 14 of the first 15 FA Cup editions, with its best performance in the 1878–79 season, reaching the third round before a 2–1 loss to Oxford University .

In 1884, Barnes FC clinched the Surrey Senior Cup, overcoming Reigate Priory 3–2 in the final at Kennington Oval.

Notable Players

Charles Morice, a prominent figure in the club, represented England in the first official international football match against Scotland in 1872, which ended in a 0–0 draw.

Decline and Reformation

Post-1886, Barnes FC’s prominence waned, with sporadic activity in local leagues during the 1930s to 1960s. The club faced financial challenges and dwindling support, leading to its dissolution in the late 1980s.

In June 2021, the club was revitalised by Janice Kilsby and Julie Burgess, granddaughters of former chairman Leslie Kilsby, alongside local enthusiasts. Under the leadership of chairman Ranko Davidov, Barnes FC re-entered competitive football in the 2022–23 season within the Surrey South East Combination League. The club now operates from the Quintin Hogg River Pitches, featuring modern facilities, and boasts a range of youth and women’s teams.
